Błonia Bistro – Krakow, Poland

When did I go there?

To be fair, with the Coronavirus Pandemic kicking over, the amount of restaurants I have visited in person extends to the fingers I have on my hand. To be very fair, I had visited many restaurants before the lock-down kicked in so I thought I would share with you today a place I have visited last in February 2019: Błonia Bistro.

Due to that… DISCLAIMER: The Restaurant did reach out and notified me that the menu has changed due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Where is Błonia Bistro?

Located next to the Błonia Meadow, at its West end, there is a new brick building that hosts a bistro after the name of the green area it resides: Błonia Bistro – on Al. 3 Maja 55. In the summertime, you can have a seat outside (outdoor patio) and in the wintertime, the indoor seating options rule the day! There is also some more space in the basement area.

What does Błonia Bistro have to offer?

Błonia Bistro has a large open kitchen and you can see when the food is prepared. They also have a large pizza oven. The offer comprises the contemporary European diet – pizza, pasta, burgers, salads, and so on. Nothing traditional Polish, I am afraid!

There were some items (that were available in February 2019) that completely stood out from the rest of the menu – like the “Kacza Buła”. That is the steamed bun hamburger with duck meat, seasoning, and topping. I am afraid though, that the restaurant reached out to me this June 2020 and mentioned that the duck hamburger is off the menu now 🙁

You can check their Facebook page for the most up-to-date info.

How were the food and service?

I tried the Błonia Burger (which back in Feb 2020 was about 22 zloty) and the Mandarin And Basil Panna Cotta (made out of wild strawberry ice cream, milk crumble, mandarin foam and white chocolate – 15 zlotych). Now (July 2020) the burger prices range from 38 zlotych for a Classic to 49 zlotych (max) for the Bistro Giant & the side dish (potatoes fries, crispers, and sauces) come as an extra (4-10 zlotych).

The burger was absolutely fabulous and one of the best ones that I had in Krakow. There was bacon, cheese, arugula leaves, and tomato slices. The buns were fresh and a bit crunchy on the top, warm and very pleasant to the taste buds. The burger came paired with potatoes chips (sliced potatoes) with cheese on top.

I was expecting the dessert to be a great hit and when I read the menu it did make my mouth water, but when the Mandarin And Basil Panna Cotta came to the table, it did not look at all that I had expected. Nor did it taste fabulous. In fact, it was rather bland! And I deemed it necessary to have everyone at the table try it and let me know what they thought: the jury’s verdict – not worth it!

Downsides of the Bistro

The menu is not available in English but their website does hold the menu in English as well, for your convenience. The waiters are not the best ones, nor the fastest ones, but when you are with friends and family you can still spend a great time together until the meal is served. The meals do take long also to be prepared so make sure you are not as hungry as a wolf when entering the restaurant as there is a long waiting time – about 30-45 minutes.

It is also rather inconvenient the fact that inside the seatings are very close to one another – or so they were in February 2019, so maybe that has changed due to the COVID-19 new regulations.

Odd aftermath

A week back, when I uploaded the photos of the Błonia Bistro on my Facebook Page, I was quickly contacted by a lady working for the restaurant. I was told to immediately remove the video and the photos as they contained information no longer valid. They no longer served that menu and there was no more “Kacza Buła”. I felt a bit odd, as this was the very first time it happened that someone reached out to take something down, but as this is my private space and these are my pictures, I have decided to still share them with you. But take note that things do change and unfortunately, you will not be eating what I have presented here.

That being said, I would love to go there again and see these changes to the menu and try again the burger menu (which was very good) but without the ice-cream (that was nothing special at all!).

NOTE: Photos take with Samsung S7 – the food photos have no filter on them, this is just their natural look at the indoor light.

Yours truly and faithfully,
