Malopolska is preparing to buy more fast trains and create better fast train lines in the very near future!

The tender is conducted in order to conclude a framework agreement for a period of 7 years. Therefore, the conclusion of the framework agreement will not mean an immediate order for the delivery of 56 trains. However, it is to guarantee the unification of the series of delivered trains in the future. It is also to have a significant impact on shortening the delivery time of vehicles that will be built on the basis of executive contracts.

“Purchases will be made on the basis of orders placed with the contractor selected in the tender. Individual orders and performance contracts depend on the current demand for EMUs and the availability of financing from the European Union.”

– Magdalena Opyd, press spokeswoman of the Marshal’s Office of the Małopolskie Voivodeship

The amount of external funds obtained for this purpose will depend on how many trains are ultimately acquired. The Małopolskie Voivodeship is applying for funding for the purchase of 14 five-unit EMUs under the National Reconstruction Plan (KPO). In the event of a positive verification of the submitted application, the first performance contract will apply to the aforementioned 14 vehicles.

Orders for further trains will be able to be implemented if money from other European funds is available.

Train services are breaking records! Additional vehicles are needed

So far (in the years 2011 – 2021) the Małopolskie Voivodeship has purchased 47 trains. These vehicles were made available to the following companies-operators: Polregio and Koleje Małopolskie for the performance of transport services covered by public service contracts.

Last year turned out to be record-breaking in terms of the number of passengers transported by railway carriers operating trains in Małopolska – over 16 million people used their offer. This year, the result may be even better, because at the beginning of June a gigantic investment carried out by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe was completed, consisting in the construction of a second, additional pair of tracks for the fast agglomeration railway on the section Kraków Główny – Kraków Płaszów, as well as an additional track on the section Kraków Płaszów – Krakow Biezanow.

The “side” tracks are intended for agglomeration and regional trains, and long-distance trains are to run in the middle. This solution is to facilitate traffic management and give carriers the opportunity to launch additional connections.

As part of the investment for over PLN 1.2 billion, m. three new bridges over the Vistula, railway flyovers (replaced the embankment) between ul. Kopernika and Miodowa, and a new stop, Kraków Grzegórzki, is to be launched in September.

Interest in train travel is growing and carriers need more vehicles to develop high-speed rail in agglomeration.

Renovations during the holidays – new PKP timetables will be available from September

For now, despite the commissioning of a new railway investment in the center of Krakow, the current timetable, which is valid from June 11 to September 2 this year, does not include revolutionary changes in courses. PKP PLK admits that the timetable for trains on the Kraków Główny – Kraków Płaszów section for the summer holidays has been developed in such a way that contractors can complete the necessary modernization works on the older tracks (implementation of these works before the completion of four railway tracks would significantly reduce the capacity of the existing double-track line) minimal impact on course completion.

It’s about, among others for work related to the stabilization of tracks on the turnout heads of stations, removal of temporary turnouts, reinforcement of the subgrade, and other track-related works in many places between the two largest passenger stations in the capital of Małopolska.

After another timetable change, i.e. from Sept. it will be possible to use all four tracks without any restrictions, a new Kraków Grzegórzki stop will be launched and it will be possible to run trains on all fast agglomeration lines every 30 minutes during peak hours, which so far has not been possible every hour.
